The Coalition has conducted the first-ever survey of officials and candidates running for county and local office that focuses on their views about airport issues and expansion. Our simple, seven-question survey aims to place the airport squarely on the the agenda where it belongs, and going forward it will help us hold elected officials accountable. All levels of government have a role to play in advancing our vision to achieve an airport that is vibrant but limited and environmentally responsible governed by policies that prioritize public health and safety, the Kensico Reservoir, and our quality of life in Westchester and the surrounding region.
Despite the narrow focus of this first-time effort, we secured a response rate of nearly 40%. That includes candidates from all corners of the County, not just communities close to the airport. On a bipartisan basis they overwhelmingly support the County Legislature's policy opposing airport expansion as reflected in its Resolution 245-2003. The average response was 4.8 on a scale of 1-5. This is good news, but our survey also reveals big gaps in candidates' knowledge about airport issues and few concrete plans for moving the County in a positive direction. Candidates need to hear from you that their positions on the airport will make a difference to you in the voting booth, and that you want them to partner with the Coalition once elected.
