Bedford Candidates 2019

See below how each candidate responded to questions about the airport -- and see who never responded at all.
  • Bobbi Bitker - Council

    Airport Impacts?

We are 25 minutes away. My house for the last 18 years is in a flight path, so I am personally affected, although I am not bothered by this. Within recent months, as you probably know, monitors have gone up in towns around our area to get data about the noise from air traffic. One was just placed in my town. Of course we are all impacted by air pollution.

Degree of Support for County Resolution 245-2003 Opposing Airport Expansion (1-5)?

5 - With the information I currently have, 5. If the environmental effects are as negative as I've read they are, we need to prevent expansion. This resolution was passed 16 years ago. Things have only deteriorated since then. We cannot afford to harm our environment further. We need to take steps to reverse any damage we can.

    Most Important Airport Issues?

My candidacy revolves around the health, safety and welfare of the people in Bedford. That extends to the greater Westchester county because we are all responsible for one another, especially when it comes to the environment. To me personally, environmental effects are a primary concern because we are in a climate crisis and everything else we do needs to be viewed through that lens. It will affect our public health, the economy, our water quality, food supply, and safety among other factors.

    Further Consideration of Privatization?

I don't favor full privatization and did not when it was last explored. I would like to learn more about the combination of private investment with government control but I doubt that is as inviting to the investors. I am not in favor of anything that relinquished government control.  To me, privatization always affects the people with the least political power. It's a question of equity and access. If it is run by the government, there are more guidelines in place to ensure that everyone is served appropriately and equally. We lose that with privatization.

Track Record / Experience with Airport Issues?

I haven't attended any airport-related public meetings, personally, however I've tried to stay current on the issues.

What Would You Do in Your Position?

My candidacy is for a municipal seat, so I will not have much input about federal regulations. Like any citizen, I will continue to comment on pending regulations that affect our town and county or dovetail with my priorities regarding the environment and equity.
