Airport Impacts?
Constituents are impacted by the county airport first and foremost environmentally through air emissions, impacting our water supply, noise pollution, impact on watershed and the overall quality of life.
Degree of Support for County Resolution 245-2003 Opposing Airport Expansion (1-5)?
5 - I strongly agree with resolution 245-2003 on a scale of 1-5 I would place it at a 5+ that we need to prevent the airport from expanding. This is critical not only for the environment, but for quality of life and protecting the growth or rather over growth of our communities.
Most Important Airport Issues?
I would put environmental issues at the top of the list, air emissions, water pollution and noise are most critical to address, followed by safety and security. We need to address these growing issues because climate change it the emergency of our time and further generations time, there is no time to waste, we must protect the environment.
Further Consideration of Privatization?
I do not favor the privatization of the airport, I was firmly against it when Astorino proposed it and I am still against it. The county needs to run the airport, protect it from over development and regulate it. If it were to fall into he hands of a private developer, it would become massive and would serve the developers in getting rich and not the community, it would get larger and would become a disaster.
Track Record / Experience with Airport Issues?
I joined several conference calls that were conducted during the Astorino administration and voiced my concerns that the airport absolutely NOT become privatized. On this public call many other concerned citizens voiced their concerns as well. The idea of making the airport into a mall, makes me sick and made ne think the Astorino administration was 100% out of touch with what people want and need, no one goes to malls anymore, they are outdated and not efficient. I have been very vocal about airport expansion, even though I live in Northern Westchester, this effect the county.
What Would You Do in Your Position?
I would continue to make my voice known and heard in White Plains at the county level with whatever administration is in office, and advocate that expanding or privatizing the airport is not in the interests of the people and residents of the county. I would continue to attend forums and public meetings and voice my environmental concerns and development concerns for further generations. We need to advocate for the long view, not for profits, we need to be responsible tot he planet first and foremost.
What Else that is Relevant to the Airport?
I went to SUNY Purchase from 1981-1985 and would watch the plans take off late at night when it was a much smaller airport. I remember the size of the airpot then. I then moved to NYC until 2003 when I moved back to Westchester County and witnessed the expansion of Westchester airpot over these last 16 years. While I understand things change, progress and expansions need to be made, we must have checks and balances and this requires government and grass roots organizations to step in and protect the airport from over development and environmental impact issues.
