Airport Impacts?
My constituents are impacted by the county airport in that White Plains is the closest city and municipality (and the county seat) to the airport, and the effects of what happens to the airport will be felt most by White Plains because of its proximity. Environmental issues, both on-site and relative to the reservoir, as well as noise and air traffic pollution are probably the biggest impacts to my constituents.
Degree of Support for County Resolution 245-2003 Opposing Airport Expansion (1-5)?
I firmly agree with the goal of preventing airport expansion. Increasing the size of the airport would completely change the dynamics of the airport itself, not to mention would create more of a logistical nightmare for the airspace in the area. HPN already navigates around air traffic routes and patterns created by the busiest airspace in the country, having to compete with JFK, LGA, EWR, and TEB. In addition, airport expansion would create a lot of unnecessary vehicular traffic to the area, which existing highways and byways are not capable of handling. One of the upsides to airport expansion is bringing more revenue, jobs, and companies to the area. But, the land and air challenges out-weigh the upside of business and area development.
Most Important Airport Issues?
Sincerely, this is an unfair question. Noise, water pollution, air emissions, safety/security are ALL the most important to address. Prioritizing these issues might be more of an appropriate question to ask. Climate change is real, and so is the threat of terrorism day-in and day-out.
Further Consideration of Privatization?
I do, indeed, favor further consideration of airport privatization. By privatizing the airport, much needed money can be injected directly by the private company / sector to increase security, reliability, comfort, efficiency, etc. Something that Westchester County cannot do because the funds are not there. Also, by having a private company take over the airport, rules and regulations are much more stringent in the private sector than they are for the government. For example, if a private company were to take over the airport, they would be (and should be) mandated to implement “green” or environmentally conscience technologies into the airport (i.e. wind power, solar power, geothermal, graywater systems, etc.)
Track Record / Experience with Airport Issues?
I am an engineer and project manager. I’ve worked on different airport projects throughout my career. I know what is required of government agencies like the DOT, FAA, and Dept. of Homeland Security for design, engineering, and construction of airports.
What Would You Do in Your Position?
What Else that is Relevant to the Airport?
I am a person who believes that they are efficient and effective ways of doing things. I am a big believer that climate change is real and that we need to immediately start looking at and implementing ways of being greener and more sustainable. I also believe that less government involvement is the way of achieving success with these ideas. The less red-tape there is, the better. Things get done faster, better, more efficiently. However, I do believe that government should step in to create laws to facilitate the process being done correctly. How to get there should not be the government’s responsibility.
